Persuasive Discourse Reflection - 1579 Words

During my time at DePauw I’ve been to all four Day of Dialogue sessions and have seen it evolve from a response to brother Jed’s protest to an organized annual event that aims to bring students, faculty, and staff together to discuss campus climate and personal experiences at DePauw. However, while this event has made progress in choosing speakers, facilitating productive conversations, and providing topical breakout sessions, many students still feel frustrated due to unproductive conversations that left out many groups that experience bias on campus. Most importantly, many students feel that these days do little to address these issues on campus, that they don’t have a chance to be heard, and that one day of dialogue is not enough to†¦show more content†¦What particularly resonated with me about Leslie Williams’ speech was the discussion about uncomfortable conversations about privilege and recognizing our own biases. By describing her personal experiences, Leslie Williams emphasized that students of color, LGBTQIA+ students, disabled students, and others often feel uncomfortable and isolated because of their identities. Although many students feel uncomfortable speaking about these topics, admitting that we are privileged, and recognizing that we grow up with different biases, other students feel this discomfort every day and aren’t able to escape it after Day of Dialogue ends. Although I often feel uncomfortable admitting my own privilege, I think it is important to acknowledge that some of us have the privilege to avoid these awkward conversations when they make us uncomfortable while other students have to live with this discomfort every day. Avoiding these conversations not only limits our capacity for change, but also our own understanding of how our identities are shaped by society. Though uncomfortable, these are necessary conversations that push us to reflect on our own experiences, admit our own biases, an d have effective conversations in order to create more equality on campus. Branches of Government The United States Constitution developed the three branches of government because under the Articles of Confederation, the government did not have enough power to deal with the consist emerging problems that were occurring at the time. Such problems lead to the Constitutional Convention, which was how the three branches of government were created (The Constitution, 2015). Traditionally, the branches of government are broken up into three different aspects, which have different functions that help the government run smoothly. The three branches of government are: the Legislative Branch, the Executive Branch, and the Judicial Branch. Legislative Branch In order to help make the laws, the legislative branch is used. The legislative branch is split up into two houses, which are the House of Representatives and the Senate (The Constitution, 2015). The House of Representatives is responsible for making and passing federal laws that are to be followed by the states. The House of Representatives is made up of no more than 435 people who are responsible for the 50 states (U.S. House of Representatives, 2016). The number of representatives per state depends on how big the state population is. Discuss the environmental imapact of Mt. St. Helens tectonic eruption Free Essays

Mount St Helens is an active volcano, south-western Washington in the Cascade Range. The volcano which had been dormant since 1857, began to show signs of renewed activity in early 1980. On May 18 1980, it erupted with such violence that the top of the mountain was blown off and a cloud of ash and gases was sent to an altitude of 19 km (12 mi). It continues to emit ash and steam intermittently. As a result of the eruption, the mountain’s elevation was decreased from 2,950 m (9,677 ft) to 2,550 m (8,365 ft). A National Volcano Monument was established here in 1982. May 18th 1980 a kryptodome appeared on the north side of the volcano, before this the volcano hadn’t erupted for over 120 yrs. March 20th an earth quake happened right underneath the volcano signalling an eruption. Unfortunately Lavafrom the last eruption had acted as a plug, and blocked the volcano. Magma was rising at a rate of six feet a day,  casing a bulge on the side of the mountain (Kryptodome). Scientists were using GPS (global Positioning satellites) to monitor the Volcano. March 31st state of emergency announced,  20m exclusion zone was placed around the volcano. May 18th the Kryptodome receded 300 feet, at 8:32 a last surge of magma caused a 5.1 Richter scale earthquake. The earthquake caused an avalanche which took the side of the mountain out; this was followed by a horizontal blast which moved at 700 mph. The blast cloud ripped through the forest, and reached Spirit Lake filling it with debris. Two minutes from the start of the blast no signs of stopping. Landslide was biggest ever recorded. The satellite picture shows the damage of the volcano’s blast to the forest. Thousands of trees up to 13km around the volcano were destroyed they were incinerated from the Pyroclastic flow. From there 30km around the volcano were blown down trees, that had to be salvaged for timber. Following that was the seared/scorched trees, which would take years to recover. The blast has caused severe damage to the vegetation around Mount St. Helens which will last for years to come. When Mount St. Helens erupted it caused massive damage to the climax community vegetation of the region mainly coniferous woodlands. With whole areas now covered in bare rock vegetation succession has now got to take place again. Starting with the pioneer communities having to reconalize the area. Vegetation succession takes years to finish with the Climax vegetation. The environmental impact of this is tremendous. However with this area it has patchy areas of growth because only the north side was affected by the blast. Half the are has a climax community and the other side has just started pioneer community. The hydrological effect of the eruption was localised to  Spirit Lake and the North and South Toutle River. Spirit Lake layer directly in the blast zone the brown earth surrounding the lake is the scorched earth. From the graph he immediate impact of the Pyroclastic flow, when it filled the Lake with debris form the Volcano it dramatically changed the temperature of the lake. Which in turn effected the vegetation and wild life in the Lake. The vegetation and wildlife was boiled alive. For the river to recover form this is would take years, to help along the process the ecologists of the area suggested that the fisheries department of the United States should replace the fish and plant new vegetation to help succession. The advice was acted upon and vegetation and wild life were added, causing a  Plagioclimax community. The main reason a lot of the devastation was caused was by the Lahars and Pyroclastic flows, the ground around the volcano is low lying land. If you look at the diagram on the right you can see the red represents highest ground and the purple is low lying ground. Because of this at the bottom of the Volcano is low lying ground and Lahars and Pyroclastic flows hug the ground. Causing the Pyroclastic flow to be directed down the slope on the north side because it is all low lying ground. The volcano only caused one global impact, the atmospheric dust cloud. Mount St. Helens before the eruption was 9,677 feet. After the eruption it dropped to 8,365 feet. The ash cloud reached over 15km into the sky, by two weeks it had encircled the entire planet. All around the world day had turned to night, this was a global impact that lasted for weeks. The lasting impact of the eruption will always been seen at Mt. St. Helens. On the basis of the article, it can be said that the market for graduation regalia (a gown, hood, and mortar board) at ANU resembles the monopoly market structure before Mr. Liu started his own business. The market basically resembles the monopoly market due to the similarity in the characteristics. In this case it is seen that, like a monopoly market, in this market also there was only one supplier in the market supplying to the entire industry. The company had higher market power and thus it was able to provide the good at a much higher price than the average cost of the product. So it can be said that the graduation regalia resembles monopoly market and in the following diagram the equilibrium price and quantity in the monopoly market can be shown. Here Q* is the equilibrium quantity and P* is the equilibrium price (Norman, Thisse and Phlips, 2000). 2. Once the students started their rival business (UniGowns) the market form changed to a duopoly market structure and it is a special form of oligopoly market. It is known that in the duopoly market, there are only two producers in the market, supplying the products to the entire industry. In case of ANU, similar situation was faced when UniGowns entered the market and supplied the commodity to the entire industry. Here the market became more competitive. A monopoly firm differs from the competitive firms. It is not the price taker. There are no competitors in the market and the firm operating in the monopoly market is free to choose its price and quantity. In case of duopoly, competitive pricing of goods takes place. The cost structures are decided by the organization on the basis of the cost structures of the competing firm. Each firm in a duopoly keeps the other firms choice of output level as fixed and the production quantities are set according to the quantities produced by the competing firms. Previously there was one supplier for supplying the gowns to the students (Norman, Thisse and Phlips, 2000). The University used to charge high rate for the gowns. But with the advent of the UniGowns, there was competition between the UC Union monopoly and the business started by ANU alumni. As Unigowns sold the gowns at a price of $89, the UC Union dropped their hiring prices from $130 to $110. They also offered a special price of $89.95 during the October graduation (Arnold, 2001).3. A business has been started by our friends to sell stationery products at the University campus of Canberra. Earlier the stationery items were sold by a monopoly firm within the campus. They used to charge high price for the goods. The stationery items like note books, files, pens were sold by the firm at the campus at high price. But the stationery shop opened by us at the campus will offer the stationery items at cheap rates. The same material will be offered at reduced rates. Init ially the profit margin will be less. Misery index comprises of the sum of the rate of unemployment and inflation rate for a given period to measure the well being of the economy (McEachern, 2015). The inflation rate and the rate of unemployment are the key indicators of the economic performance of a country. With the rise of the misery index, indicates worse economic condition for the country. The rate of inflation is controlled by the monetary policy of the country, CAD surplus or deficit. Thus it is the key indicator of the economic performance (Kirkpatrick and Dahlquist, 2006). High rate of inflation causes adverse effects on the performance of the economy. High rate of inflation results in high price of the goods. The purchasing power of the consumers decline. High rate of inflation also results in higher demands for wages as people want to maintain the same standard of living. The labour market is affected with high inflation rate. High rate of inflation results in unemployment in the medium term which leads to loss of international competitiveness of the country. High rate of unemployment poses negative threat on the economy. The standard of living of the people of the country reduces. It reduces the purchasing power of the people. High rate of unemployment for a long period of time leads to the erosion of the skills which is basically robbing the economy by not utilising the useful talents. 2. The real GDP of Australia is better than the previous year. Since 2012, the growth of the real GDP of Australia has been at a rate of 2.3%. The trade is expected to decline by 3.5% in 2015. With the decline in the terms of trade, the GDP growth is expected to be 4.5% in 2015(Economywatch.com, 2015). The higher exports will support growth in Australia. The contribution of the resource sector to the real GDP growth will fall. Sustained economic growth will be maintained by contribution from the non resource sectors. 3. The unemployment rate of Australia has declined to 6.1% in December 2014. This shows that there has been rise in the employment rate of the country. The supply of labour in Australia has increased as a result of increase in demand for jobs. The economy is recovering. As the investment in the economy is rising, there is increase in the number of jobs. This has resulted in the shift of the demand curve upwards. The term recovery can be used to describe the business cycle stage of Australia. The economy is recovering from its low point and it is expected that better conditions ahead for Australia. There is fall in the unemployment rate in the country and the productivity of the country is rising (Rba.gov.au, 2015). 4. The Governmnet of Australia aims at reaching to a fiscal surplus. The major decisions taken by the Government includes investment in Australian schooling , infrastrcuture that will enhance the productivity and ensure fairer policy in Australia. The fiscal policy will maintain the solid growth of Australia and the low unemployment rate. The Governmnet has designed a stimulus package. Apart from the resource sector like the production sector and exports , the non resource drivers of growth will be taken into consideration (Budget.gov.au, 2015). The Governmnet will continue to exercise its restrain on spending that will not hamper the growth of Australia and employment rate. The measures have been taken to offset the lower tax receipts by the Government(Financial Review, 2015). The fiscal policy implemented by the Government is appropriate to boost the economic growth of the country. 5. The monetary policy by the RBA has the key features The cash rate has been reduced by 25 basis points to 2.25 percent. The reduction will be effective from 4th February 2015. The monetary policy by RBA is an easing monetary policy with the fall in the global oil prices and disinflation in the economy. The monetary policy of the country has been formulated to control the money supply in the country. The interest rate cuts of the country will boost the money supply in the country.
